How to read an upgrade tree without wasting resources
Branching upgrade trees are everywhere now, from tower defence to RPGs. They look generous, but they're really a series of trade-offs designed to make you commit.
The trap is treating them like a checklist. You start pouring points down one branch, then jump to another because it looks shiny, and end up mediocre at everything. Focus wins.
Before spending, ask what role this unit needs to play. In Emberfall Legends we picked one healer to lean fully into support and left the offensive branch alone. That clarity made hard fights winnable.
When a game lets you preview higher tiers, do it. Sometimes the exciting-looking early node leads to a dead-end, while a dull-looking one unlocks something game-changing three tiers up.
Commit early, respec rarely, and let each unit be great at one thing. Spread-thin builds feel busy but rarely perform.
